В 1849 и 1851 механик Джордж Генри Корлисс [Corliss, George Henry] получил патенты на свои изобретения: устройство впускного и выпускного клапанов, которые существенно повышали КПД паровой машины. На Выставке Столетия [Centennial Exposition, Philadelphia's] в Филадельфии в 1876 работала паровая машина Корлисса мощностью в 1600 л.с., от которой приводились в действие все экспонаты Машинного павильона [Machinery Hall]
